Schema’s CEO joins Jordanian team to Everest in support of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Center
Maali Qasem Khader, CEO and Founder of leading sustainability advisory firm, Schema, joined a group of 21 Jordanians from 1 to 18 April 2013 in a first-of-its-kind initiative to raise funds for the much needed expansion project of King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC).
Amman, Jordan, 18 April 2013
The mission titled “From the lowest point to the highest point for cancer” launched from the Dead Sea in Jordan, to nearly the highest point on Earth, Mount Everest Base Camp. Shortly after launching at the Dead Sea’s King Hussein Bin Talal Convention Centre managed by Hilton, the team were joined by young cancer out-patients from KHCC who presented them with hand drawn wish flags to take with them to Mt. Everest base camp.
The trek was planned for April to capitalize on the high season of Everest trekkers and climbers to tell people from all around the world about the cause of the Jordanian team’s journey and attract their support.
Participation in this mission was self-funded by each member, and all participants were committed to lead and innovate fundraising activities towards the expansion project of KHCC, with the goal of reaching 1 million US dollars. A special pledge page was created for the cause at http://www.cancerpledges.com/SelectPledge.aspx?P_ID=35 and is still open for donations.
Volunteerism has been embedded in the culture and spirit of Schema since its establishment, led by its socially wired and committed CEO. For Maali, this was not the first adventure of this sort or challenge level, as she has previously hiked Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. But what brought special flavour to this adventure was joining an inspiring group of business leaders in Jordan for such a noble cause.
Commenting on this experience, Maali said: “It was an experience of a lifetime to go on an expedition of this nature with such prominent people that brought to light the importance and value of team work. The team was one of its kind, maximizing on our differences to make us stronger and better equipped for such a challenge demonstrating that individually we can make a difference and collectively we create impact“.
